Hacksaw’s Challenge

Hacksaw's Challenge

Hi everyone,

I hope you are having a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous Year.

Over the last few months I have talked to all of you about “Hacksaw’s $100,000 Challenge” to raise $100,000 for breast cancer research, funding community programs and increasing awareness.

What made me think about trying to do this and why this year?

This year I turn 70 and rather than celebrate it with a party for me I thought I should try and do something worthwhile. I don’t think there are any families that have not been touched by cancer. As many of you know Kathy had Hodgkin’s and there is a strong connection between Hodgkin’s and breast cancer. For the past 9 years the whole family has been involved in the CBCF Run for the Cure. I believe that big strides have been made in many cancer cures and that together we can make a difference.

Why “Hacksaw”?

This is my nickname that goes back a long long time. I first got it when I was playing rugby football in England; it was resurrected when I started selling hacksaws and other hand tools in the late 70’s and then Jeff and Kathy’s friends made it larger than life at the various keg parties. Doing double funnels might have had something to do with that!

For me this is going to be a year long challenge. I am going to run in the Mississauga ½ Marathon in May, the “eight miler” in Stowe, Vermont in July and hopefully qualify for the New York ½ Marathon in August culminating with the Run for the Cure 5km run on Sunday, September 30th, 2007.

How are we going to do it?

I am inviting each one of you to become a “Hacksaw’s Crusader”. Many of you have already agreed to join the crusade (there may have been some alcohol involved in this decision).

To become a Crusader you need to raise a minimum of $500 from families, friends or co-workers. Therefore we only need 200 Crusaders to raise $100,000!

By the beginning of April I will be launching a website where you will be able to join the Hacksaw Challenge and start fundraising. Your sponsors will be able to make a donation directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) and receive an electronic tax receipt within minutes.

I am also hoping that all of the “Crusaders” will come to Toronto for the Run For The Cure and that we will all walk or run on the Sunday morning.

Please let me know that you are going to join the crusade and support me on this very important challenge.
